Today on Friday Church Finds we highlight Zion Evangelical Church of Mt. Clemens, Michigan. Zion is one of the oldest congregations that originated in the former German Evangelical Synod of North America in the Michigan District. Although the congregation was not officially formed until January 1, 1860, a Pastor Rauschert supplied a group of German-speaking Christians in the area from 1855-1858. A Constitution had later been drafted on January 6, 1862 and Rev. Wilhelm Kies, the first "formal" Pastor, was called to Zion in August 1862.
One of the most notable pastors of Zion Evangelical Church was the Rev. Jacob Wulfmann. Rev. Wulfmann was called to Zion on October 1, 1926 and served until his retirement in 1949. Rev. Wulfmann also served as the President of the Michigan District of the Evangelical Synod of North America from 1925-1928 and 1934-1935. He also played a vital role in the establishment of the Evangelical and Reformed Church in June of 1934, a merger of the Reformed Church in the United States and the Evangelical Synod of North America.
One of the most notable features of Zion United Church of Christ are the 48 windows that were designed by Margaret Cavanaugh and dedicated in 1978. At the time of dedication, it was noted that the motif of the windows was "New Beginnings." This is vividly demonstrated in both the "Creation" window and the "Birth of the Son of Man" window.
Zion United Church of Christ continues to play a vital role in the City of Mt. Clemens. The congregation is a member of the Detroit Metropolitan Association of the Michigan Conference United Church of Christ. The congregation is currently served by the Rev. Scott Davis. On Tuesday, May 23, 2023, Rev. Dr. Donald Harpster will present on the "Americanization of the Philadelphia German Reformed Community in the Era of the Revolution. The Americanization of the Philadelphia German Reformed community had its origins during the era of the American Revolution. Coming from a European Reformed tradition that had state support, the community found it difficult to maintain a church in the pluralistic environment of colonial Pennsylvania but the church’s charter of incorporation provided the needed modicum of support for the religious enterprise. Throughout the American Revolution, the Philadelphia German Reformed community supported the Patriot cause and its pastor, Caspar Weyberg, openly spoke in favor of independence during the British occupation of Philadelphia. However, the Philadelphia German Reformed community still valued aspects of its European heritage. The official language of the congregation remained German throughout the eighteenth century. In addition, the community was loyal to its theological and liturgical heritage embodied in the Heidelberg Catechism and the Palatinate Liturgy.
This presentation will take place via Zoom on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, from 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM ET. This is a donation-based event to support the work of the Society. Advanced registration is required and can be completed by clicking the link below.

Today on Friday Church Finds we share Himmel’s Church in Dornsife, PA. This congregation is celebrating their 250th anniversary this year and we wish them many blessings as they move forward in faith.
Himmel’s Church was organized in 1773 and a log building served the Lutheran and Reformed congregations until a stone church was built in 1818. A frame structure was later built in 1903 and held a steeple that reached 105 feet into the sky. Sadly, the church building, including the original record books, was entirely destroyed by fire in 1959.
Ground was broken in 1960 for a new church building and this is the present building that serves Himmel’s Church. Today, Himmel’s Church is a member congregation of the Central Association of the Penn Central Conference United Church of Christ. You can learn more about this congregation by visiting their Facebook page Himmel’s Church or by visiting their website by clicking below.
